Exeter-based Mulberry Group has saved over £400 per month on fuel, which equates to a 35% saving, since eliminating all private mileage, by tracking all of its engineers. “We knew gratuities were being taken by drivers using the vans out of hours, but we could not prove it,” said Cary Burwood, Director at Mulberry Group.
“We only allow business use – particularly as the petrol pump prices are rapidly rising, and knew we would have a problem if we did not do something quick. We came across Remote Asset Management and instantly liked what we saw.” The company wanted to start reaping the benefits of using the system as soon as possible, a request that RAM took literally, by fitting all of the six vehicle tracking units on the Sunday prior to Christmas, allowing the Mulberry Group to begin reducing their fleet costs immediately after the New Year break.
“When we returned back to work in January 2008, all the tracking units were in operation and we suddenly had a clear view of what our fleet was doing,” continued Burwood. By cracking down on private mileage we were able to shave £400 off our monthly fuel expenses, which stopped almost overnight, but there soon appeared to be many more areas where we were able to save money, directly from our bottom line.
“We decided to use the tracking reports as an electronic timesheet, using their site arrival and departure times as payable hours. Since then we have seen our productivity rise, as our engineers are now on site at 8am, instead of still being on the road at 8.45am! I would say we are getting about 80 hours extra work per week based on this.”

We can now provide customers with accurate ETAs on site, we can verify hours worked on site and use this for billing enquiries and we can easily find the closest engineer to a job when we get an emergency call.
